For our May Social Meeting we turned out the lights and enjoyed the video: The History & Future of America's Public Land.

This full length feature explained how the United States, while having acquired the entire land we call America, has, in 2025, barely retained 30% of that land as public owned. Narrated by Walt Dabney, a veteran National Park Service Superintendent and retired Director of the Texas State Park System.

Dabney prophetically anticipated the growing demand by wealthy developers and land speculators to pressure states to sell hundreds-of-thousands of acres of our public land, thus forever losing access by the public.

Legislation, nationally and by several western states, has been proposed that will forever take away land used by millions of outdoors enthusiasts including National Park land. Several folks in attendance last week asked for the YouTube link to this excellent and informative video. Here’s hoping you enjoy it as much as we did.

Attention All Parents Of High School Age Students

For all high school students that will be 18 years of age on or before November 5, 2024, their school must “distribute voter registration applications to all eligible students” and school staff. That means that if your student will be 18 years of age on or before election day, the schools are legally required to either distribute a voter registration application or bring in a local Deputy Voter Registrar to register them.
Our children, and grand children, need to learn early in their life the importance of participating in elections.
These will be the voters of the future and can easily become involved with election poll working and other aspects of civic opportunities.
It’s up to all of us to encourage that first step.

FACTS ABOUT VOTER REGISTRATION IN TEXAS

Texas Makes it extremely difficult to register to vote so it is critical to check that you are still registered. Gov. Greg Abbott claims to have purged over One Million Voters based on often inaccurate or outdated information.

You CANNOT register to vote online in Texas, you can only complete a mail-in application to receive a voter application which must be filled out and returned to your County Elections Administration office or a Wise County VOLUNTEER DEPUTY REGISTRAR.
If you have NOT VOTED in the last two elections you can be dropped from voter rolls. Check here.
If you have changed your name, address or county of residence you need to update your VR certificate information.
